Casting for Josh Boone’s ‘New Mutants‘ is in full swing and he’s just signed on Henry Zaga (’13 Reasons Why’) to play Roberto da Costa who is better known as the mutant Sunspot. He’ll be joining a cast which already includes Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Rosario Dawson. In the film, we’ll see the five young adults with mutant powers who are being held against their will and must come together as a team in order to escape. This is an X-Men spinoff which has yet to reference any ties to the previous X-Men movies, and while there will most likely be some, initial casting hasn’t looked too hopeful on characters showing up.
With Zaga’s inclusion, that means all of the central mutants for the film have been cast outside of Danielle Moonstar/Mirage which currently has Blu Hunt (‘The Originals’) and True O’Brien (‘Days of Our Lives,”Queen Sugar’) rumored to be the leading names for the role.
Sunspot has the ability to both absorb and channel solar energy which gives him the ability to fly, shoot off solar beams, increased strength, and more! Not only that but in the comics, he is highly intelligent and very loyal to his teammates. In fact, he has risen in the comics to the point where he took over A.I.M. and made it a force for good and not evil. For a long period of time though he was quite hot-headed and that played into quite a few issues in his earlier appearances which could be mirrored here.
Previously, the character was portrayed by Adan Canto in 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’
