inhumans

As Anson Mount isn’t allowed to speak in ‘Inhumans‘ we’ve just learned that he created a new form of sign language for Black Bolt to communicate with those around him. Since the character isn’t from Earth, it wasn’t as simple as learning the American version of Sign Language, but a new one had to be created from scratch. Anytime Black Bolt opens his mouth and utters a sound, waves of destruction roll forth, so this was the show’s solution to the problem.

In the books, we often see Medusa translating her husband’s thoughts from the look on his face or by a simple gesture. However, that isn’t the route that they wanted to go here.

According to Mount:

“I actually have to do more preparation when it comes to scenes in which I sign, and I can’t use American Sign Language. Because he’s not from Earth, he wouldn’t know American Sign Language, so I’m making my own sign system.”

Having to sign will make things different then most shows as is but creating an entirely new version of it for the show is both impressive and daunting. It makes you wonder if the other characters will translate it if there will be subtitles for his signing, and how long it will take someone to put together an online translation of everything that he signs.

He is at least sticking partially true to the comic as both his facial expressions and body language will factor into the meaning of what he is trying to convey.

‘Inhumans’ will be available in IMAX for two weeks on September 1st, 2017 and debut on ABC on September 26th, 2017.
