Fans are anxiously awaiting the revival of ‘The Tick’ on Amazon Prime.  The new show is a reboot of a short-lived comedy that ran on FOX in 2001, which was itself a live action version of a cartoon that previously ran on the network in the 90s and was based on an indie comic by Ben Edlund.  Edlund serves as a creator of the new version, which stars Peter Serafinowicz (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) as the titular hero, with Griffin Newman as his sidekick Arthur.

Now after a few teaser images have been released, Amazon has finally announced a release date in a new promo clip.

The first ‘Tick’ series arrived at the very dawn of the superhero movie movement, years before Marvel Studios would create a true cinematic explosion with the genre.  Patrick Warburton played The Tick on that version of the show.

Edlund thinks the new version may have a better shot in the present super hero-filled environment.:

“It’s a tremendous balancing act because it had to have stakes, it had to have blood, it had to have certain things that are part of the living language of superheroes in the popular culture today.  It has a responsibility if it wants to play in that pool to have life and death, to have a relationship to violence that none of the other iterations did. And so how do you have The Tick slip in a pool of blood and have it be funny? You have to find a very specific tone.”

As has been observed, the pilot was much darker than the previous ‘Tick’ spins, perhaps bringing it more in line with much of today’s superhero fare.

Joining Serafinawicz and Newman in the cast are Brendan Hines as a fellow hero called Superian, Jackie Earl Haley as The Terror and Whoopi Goldberg as herself.  (Haley made a splash previously as Rorschach in the cinematic adaptation of ‘The Watchmen’.)
