sleeping-beautiesIn a move that will surprise no one, the rights to Stephen and Owen King’s upcoming novel ‘Sleeping Beauties‘ have been grabbed to develop a television series. Stephen King’s works are being picked up left and right as of late so it should come as no surprise that his latest work with his son has already been nabbed. Anonymous Content beat out competitors to develop this series with the Kings as an ongoing television series. With the novel not due out until September by Simon & Schuster‘s Scribner, we don’t yet know how well this will lend itself to a continuing show.

Anonymous Content beat out competitors to develop this series with the Kings as an ongoing television series. With the novel not due out until September by Simon & Schuster‘s Scribner, we don’t yet know how well this will lend itself to a continuing show.

At this time Michael Sugar (‘Spotlight’) and Ashley Zalta are attached as executive producers. This pair has worked together in the past on Netflix’s ‘The OA’ which has garnered more positive reviews than negative as well as the upcoming Netflix series ‘Maniac.’ With both of these past outings having been on Netflix we might have a clue as to which network we’ll be seeing ‘Sleeping Beauties’ show up on!

While Syfy was able to keep ‘Haven‘ going for quite a few years loosely based off of the novel ‘The Colorado Kid,’ that method hasn’t always worked for these adaptations. All anyone has to do is point towards ‘Under The Dome‘ as the perfect example of how things can go off-kilter rather quickly.

The novel itself is described as:

In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King, and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: what might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?

In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep; they become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place … The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease. Is Evie a medical anomaly to be studied? Or is she a demon who must be slain?

Set in a small Appalachian town whose primary employer is a women’s prison, Sleeping Beauties is a wildly provocative, gloriously absorbing father/son collaboration between Stephen King and Owen King.

From the synopsis, this could easily lend itself to a one or two season series without straying away from the novel’s plot. Depending on how firmly the networks sticks to the novel, there could be a significant chance of something longer.
