cloak-dagger

The YA Marvel Pilot for ‘Cloak & Dagger‘ has clearly gone over well at Freeform as the network has just placed a 10-episode Season 1 order for the series. There is still no word as to if this series falls under the loosely “It’s all connected” umbrella that seems to not be three separate ones in the ABC shows, the Netflix series, and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. While every television series makes mention of the films, there isn’t much back and forth beyond that, so I suspect we won’t see any here either.

Disney Distribution had an appearance at the MIPTV event, and Senior Vice President Mark Endẽmano dropped the number of episodes that we can expect in the first season. He also had the following to say about the series:

“Cloak & Dagger is about character and emotion above all. It tells of a romance between Tandy and Tyrone in a way that we haven’t really seen before in a Marvel TV series. So think Romeo and Juliet though I can tell you that they won’t be dying at the end of the first episode!”

This announcement pretty much reflects the very loose series synopsis which had previously been released. While the official word on the series order had just come through, it may well have already been approved behind the scenes with the show preparing to launch earlier than originally thought. This line of reasoning comes from the fact that the screening happened in conjunction with the ‘Inhumans’ screening and that series is set to launch this Fall.

As no filming has leaked, it seems unlikely that we’ll also see this drop in the Fall but chances for a Winter release or Spring of 2018 seems to be likely. With the budget previously being announced as comparable to the Netflix series, then we might have some pretty amazing special effects in order as they’ll have three fewer episodes to spread money across. Visually, this could be pretty amazing, but with both Cloak & Dagger’s powers, there would be an enhanced need for CGI once they become superheroes.

Synopsis:

It is a coming-of-age series based on the beloved Marvel characters. Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul.

Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.

Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.
