David Harbour has proven to be a breakout star on Netflix’s hit ‘Stranger Things’ playing Police Chief Jim Hopper and serving as the defacto spokesperson for the show in interviews and on awards shows. Now he might be earning a high profile role on the big screen, as word has emerged that Harbour is being eyed to play Cable, in ‘Deadpool 2’. Reportedly, Harbour has already screen tested for the role although his reps and 20th Century Fox have not made any official statements.
The time travelling cyborg mutant was teased by Ryan Reynold’s Merc with a Mouth at the end of the first ‘Deadpool’ and the two characters have a lengthy history in the comic books. Previously, Kyle Chandler was rumored to be the leading candidate, with other actors like Ron Perlman and Stephen Lang throwing their own names out for consideration.
The brooding, stocky Harbour could be a fantastic choice to play Cable. Though he doesn’t have white hair, that could be easily overlooked. Physically, he looks the part more than Chandler and the buzz he has earned for ‘Stranger Things’ (which is about to launch its second season) could only help but drum up excitement for ‘Deadpool 2’.
‘Deadpool 2’ will feature a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick with ‘John Wick’ co-director David Leitch taking over for Tim Miller who directed the first ‘Deadpool’ but who opted out of the sequel after creative differences. In addition to Cable, ‘Deadpool 2’ will feature the film debut of fellow mutant Domino. The behind-the-scenes shuffling leaves the release date up in the air, but it was originally expected to hit theaters in March of 2018. Considering that the first movie was made for a modest budget, it is entirely possible that the second could still make that date.
