Things are finally picking up speed for Warner Brothers’ DC Comics cinematic universe and that includes ‘Shazam!’ which perhaps has the biggest star attached to it, Dwayne Johnson.  The artist formerly known as The Rock recently provided the voice for Maui in Disney’s hit ‘Moana’ but he is due to star in another string of live action potential hits which kicks off this spring with ‘Fast & Furious 8’ and continue through ‘Baywatch’ and ‘Jumanji’.  He also has original action flick ‘Rampage’ in the works, along with ‘Doc Savage’, ‘Big Trouble In Little China’ and sequels ‘San Andreas 2’ and ‘Journey 3: From the Earth To The Moon’.

But at some point, Johnson plans to squeeze in an appearance as Black Adam in ‘Shazam!’  Black Adam has been depicted in various ways since he debuted in 1945.  He is often the evil mirror image to hero Shazam/Captain Marvel but has also gone up against other big heroes and even killed a few, including Terra and Frankenstein Jr. from the Teen Titans.

In more modern comics, he has been depicted as more of an anti-hero, ruling the fictitious middle eastern nation of Kahndaq.  Most of his actions have been in defense of his homeland, which has put him in the crosshairs of the Suicide Squad among others.  But his love for Kahndaq and its people make him less of a villain and it appears that the film will continue with this “gray” depiction.

Keep in mind, DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns is now overseeing WB’s DC films and it was Johns who penned most of the modern Black Adam stories in ’52’ and ‘Justice Society of America’ among other titles.  It wouldn’t be surprising if the film version reflects Johns’ take on the character.

Johnson recently posted a picture on Instagram teasing info on ‘Shazam’ and now producer Beau Flynn has retweeted that image but added his own line, “One of the most powerful anti-heroes on the planet is coming. And he is coming in hot. Brace yourself for BLACK ADAM!”  That seems to support the idea that Johnson’s Black Adam will not be a straight up villain, but a Magneto-esque antihero.

Check out Flynn’s post below:
