Zoe Kravitz has been talking about ‘Fantastic Beasts 2‘ and the “complex relationship” that her character Leta Lestrange will have with Newt Scamander in the sequel! She was only hinted at in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ when we saw a picture of her among Scamander’s things but her role is set to be much larger in the upcoming film. This is an interesting tidbit as we’ve previously heard that Newt might not be the lead going forward.
For those unfamiliar with the Harry Potter universe her name might not set off any bells but her last name Lestrange have Muggles everywhere seeing the family connection that exists with Bellatrix Lestrange, even if Bellatrix is only a Lestrange by marriage.
The new details came to life as she was being interviewed about HBO’s upcoming series ‘Big Little Lies’ when she was first asked if her role in ‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ would be much larger going forward where she states that:
Yeah, it’s very exciting! Yeah, it wasn’t much, in the first one.
When asked if the film had already begun production she stated that:
“No, that starts in June or July, I think. It’s sometime in the summer. I’m very excited. The one day I was on set for that, and also for my audition process, being able to work with Eddie [Redmayne] and David [Yates] was incredible. The script was very under wraps, so even signing onto it, I hadn’t read the script. I just went off of who was involved, and J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter films, so I knew it was going to be incredible, especially with how involved J.K. is. And then, I got to see the film, after I was already signed on, and it exceeded my expectations. That was a really interesting experience, to sit back and watch a movie that you loved, and then get to walk out and say, “I get to be in that!” It’s a very cool thing.”
She won’t just be in the first sequel either as it sounds like she and Newt will be sharing the big screen for quite some time to come:
“I think there’s a few ahead. The relationship between Leta and Newt Scamander is a complex relationship, so I think there will be a lot of time for that to grow and develop, which will be fun.”
It doesn’t say exactly how many we’ll see these two together in, but that statement really makes it seem as if it will be at least two if not more. What can we really expect, though? She pulls a Jon Snow here when she answers that:
“I know nothing! I have an idea, based off of when I auditioned, but I know nothing. Even when I went to go do my chemistry read with Eddie, he was trying to help me piece together what was happening in the scene that we were reading. He doesn’t get to see anything either, so he was like, “I think based off of this line and this line, and what we shot here and here, this is what’s going on.” We had to guess. It was funny to watch him, trying to piece it all together.”
It is still quite unclear as to how Kravitz will factor into the film going forward but I’m suspecting a love and hate relationship is going to evolve. If it’s complex and Newt has a picture of her, I suspect a past romance will keep them together while being enemies will throw things into the realm of complexity.
