the-magicians-season-1-finale-600x338

Adapted (ever more loosely so) from the novels by Lev Grossman, ‘The Magicians’ one of the latest additions to Syfy’s stable of original programming, and a new season is fast approaching. And with that impending premiere there must also come new footage! Syfy knows that as well as we do, and barely two weeks after releasing the first trailer for the new season, the network has dropped a second.

Picking up in the wake of a first season finale that took something of a turn from the source material, having begun as the story of a young man attending a school of (actual) magic and ultimately sees our heroes travel to the Narnia-esque parallel world of Fillory to do battle with the Beast. As the season drew to a close, virtually the entire cast had endured life-changing experiences, and the fates of more than a few were left in limbo (some more literally than others).

Released today, the second trailer for the upcoming second season offers some sense of how the show will continue from there. Much of the focus of the trailer is that some of our heroes (four in total) will be assuming the queen- and kingships of Fillory. This plot point opens a number of possibilities, and one that the trailer makes clear that the show will be exploring is the parallels to ‘Game of Thrones’. Of course, this is hardly coincidental. The show is well aware of the comparison’s to HBO’s flagship series, and in case there was any doubt of that fact, the trailer even makes sure to throw in a Ned Stark joke for good measure.

You can see the trailer, which clocks in at just over two minutes, below:

‘The Magicians’ stars Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, and Summer Bishil. The series’ second season will premiere on Syfy on January 25, 2017.
