The Tick

Amazon’s Pilot Season has come and gone once again, and as the dust settles, the winners are being announced. For those unfamiliar, the Pilot Season process involves releasing a number of pilots via the Amazon Prime streaming service. From there, the ones that garner the best audience reactions are picked up with a full series order.

Among the projects included in the latest round was a live action revival of ‘The Tick‘, and we are pleased to learn that the Wild Blue Yonder has been given the greenlight with a full season order! Though it’s always tricky to judge a show based on the pilot alone, the series seems set to ably mix the sort of offbeat (and sometimes outright bizarre) superhero parody that the property has always been known for with a (relatively) serious ongoing storyline in a way that no prior Tick adaptation has attempted.

A co-production with Sony Pictures Television, the revival of ‘The Tick’ was developed by the character’s creator Ben Edlund (of ‘Supernatural’ fame), along with fellow producers Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld. In addition to Ben Edlund’s original indie comics, ‘The Tick’ has previously been adapted into a 1994 animated series and a short lived 2001 live action series (starring Patrick Warburton in the title role).

From  the official summary:

In a world where superheroes have been real for decades, an accountant with mental health issues and zero powers comes to realize his city is owned by a global supervillain long thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero.

No release date has been set for the first season, but the pilot episode of ‘The Tick‘ remains available to stream on Amazon Prime. The series stars Peter Serafinowicz, Griffin Newman, Jackie Earl Haley, Valorie Curry, Yara Martinez, and Brendan Hines.
