does-thanos-already-have-an-infinity-stone-405283

Understandably at this point in time, fans of the MCU are very curious about the state of the Infinity Stones, the McGuffin items that have tied Marvel’s movie’s together ever since their introduction way back in the days before the first ‘Avengers’ movie. At this point I believe we are still shy at least one of the stones, and fans are very curious about whether we will be seeing another Infinity Stone in James Gunn’s next installment in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise, which is set to premiere in May of 2017. However, after much fan speculation, Gunn himself has let us know definitively an answer to that question.

According to Gunn on a recent post to Facebook, which was very short, and to the point:

“There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2.”

Which, from a certain point of view, is probably for the best. The first ‘Guardians’ movie revolved almost entirely around an Infinity Stone, and to have another stone be a focal point for the sequel would make the whole thing seem repetitive, especially when we have far more interesting plot threads left over after the first film, such as the relationship between Gamora, Nebula, and Thanos, the backstory of Drax and what happened to his family, and of course, who exactly is Peter Quill’s father. And yes, while I do not doubt that Thanos will at least be mentioned in the second film, that might just be enough to keep the ball rolling on that particular side of building toward the ‘Infinity War,’ without the Guardians having to find and protect another stone. Besides, there is already a lot of speculation that ‘Doctor Strange’ might introduce another Infinity Stone, and that should be enough to keep us interested in that storyline.

What are your thoughts on having a ‘Guardians’ movie sans Infinity Stones? Did the stone in the first movie give it higher stakes since you knew the power of the other stones and what keeping them safe from Thanos meant to the larger MCU? Does it feel like Part 2 will then be a smaller (in stakes) movie since it seems it will focus on the Guardians and not a massive plot line that threatens all of the MCU?
