When James Gunn unveiled the first official photo from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ featuring the silhouettes of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and a very tiny Groot earlier this week, the filmmaker also unveiled some brand new cast members joining Chris Pratt and company such as Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kurt Russell. While Klementieff is set to play Mantis, it’s being rumored that veteran actor Russell could be Peter Quill’s father. But what of the tall blonde Australian actress known for her roles in ‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’, and ‘Macbeth’? There are a few theories going around right now concerning her part.

Though Gunn has previously stated that she won’t be featured in the follow-up to his surprise 2014 hit, Buzzfeed notes that Debicki seems like a pretty good match for Captain Marvel. Standing at a statuesque 6’3”, she definitely resembles Carol Danvers when she’s sporting a short blonde hairstyle. And though the Carol Corps supposedly won’t see her on the big screen until her solo film debuts in 2018, remember that we will be meeting Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther ahead of his movie thanks to ‘Captain America: Civil War’. We could maybe see the same thing happen here, but there are a few other possibilities as well.

If Gunn was telling the truth before and Colonel Danvers isn’t set to join the ranks of the Guardians, then Entertainment Weekly suggests that a different Captain Marvel could be in the cards for Debicki. The fourth person in the comics to take up the mantle of Captain Marvel is named Phyla-Vell. Otherwise known as Quasar or Martyr, Phyla possesses similar powers to Carol Danvers and she also served a stint with the Guardians at one time.

And speaking of that particular Captain Marvel, it’s also possible that Debicki could be playing Phyla-Vell’s former lover Moondragon. The openly bisexual telepath and skilled martial artist once known as Heather Douglas. That name is significant because she is the daughter of Arthur Douglas, the man whose soul was bound to a new body after his death at the hands of Thanos in order to become Drax the Destroyer. Of course, the MCU version of Drax is a bit different than the comic version, but he could still have a daughter that he thought was dead only to have her come back and fight side by side with him to try and defeat the Mad Titan.

Until then, who do you think that Elizabeth Debicki will play in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’? Could you see her playing Carol Danvers, Phyla-Vell, or Moondragon? Or is there another cosmic Marvel character that you think she’d be a good fit for? Sound off in the comments below.
