Judging by the weather lately, many may be wondering when winter will actually come this season.  Well, in a manner of speaking, HBO may have the answer.  ‘Game of Thrones’ returns for its sixth season on April 24, 2016 at 9pm EST.

Not only will fans discover the true fate of Jon Snow, but this season marks a huge development in that it is the first time that the show will surpass the book series it’s based on.  George R.R. Martin created the book series, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ on which the TV show is based, but Martin is a notoriously slow writer and the show is a major hit.  The last book in the series, ‘A Dance With Dragons’ came out back in 2011.  The next book, ‘The Winds of Winter’ is still in the works.

One thing we do know is that this season will see the return of the precognitive Bran Stark (and Hodor).  But fans are keen to discover the fate of Jon Snow, one of the main characters on the show, who was seemingly betrayed by the Night Watch and stabbed to death.  And what about Daenerys Targaryen, who was last seen surrounded by Dothraki warriors?

It should be pointed out that Martin works closely with showrunners David Benioff and D.B Weiss, so whatever transpires on the show should reflect the events in the unpublished books.  (In addition to ‘The Winds of Winter’, there is a seventh book planned, ‘A Dream of Spring’ which will wrap up the series.)

This season marks the first time that book readers won’t have the upper hand in knowing what is upcoming.  How that will impact viewership remains to be seen.

Well, set your DVRs!  Now you know when the hit fantasy drama returns!  What do you want to see transpire in the new season?
