Rey Star Wars The Force Awakens

Fans, male and female, expressed outrage when Rey was omitted from the currently available ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ edition of Monopoly, including an eight year-old named Annie Rose, who hand wrote a letter to manufacturers Hasbro which went viral.

You can read the note for yourself below:

This got the internet so fired up that Hasbro made the following official statement:

“The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie’s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance… [Hasbro is] thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines… Fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6″ and 12″ Rey action figures.”

It should perhaps be noted that Hasbro not only produces the Star Wars Monopoly and other board games, but the action figure line for the franchise and other licensed products.

But after such a frenzy, Hasbro has made a running change to the game.  Future editions will include Rey along with other modern day ‘Star Wars’ characters Finn and Kylo Ren.

In a statement, the toy manufacturer expressed:

“We love the passion fans have for Rey, and are happy to announce that we will be making a running change to include her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game available later this year.”

In all fairness, there were only four major pieces in the first version, two from the original movies– Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader– and two from ‘The Force Awakens’– Finn and Kylo Ren.  It was probably just a random choice as to which two new characters to include and had they left out Finn, a similar outcry could have erupted because that character is black.  Hasbro was kind of damned either way.

What do you think?  Are you glad Rey will be in future versions of this board game?
