Next year, DC’s Cinematic Universe gets dark as the US government assembles some of the baddest of super criminals together as a black ops unit, officially termed Task Force X, but more colorfully (and alliteratively) known as the ‘Suicide Squad’.  David Ayer directed the flick, which features an all-star cast including Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as The Joker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and a cameo by Ben Affleck as Batman.

Joel Kinnaman plays the team’s non-criminal leader, Colonel Rick Flag and one other character has quietly stood out like a sore thumb since the full team was unveiled— Katana, played by Karen Fukuhara. In the comics, Katana, a.k.a. Tatsu Toro, is a super hero and has been a member of the Justice League, the Outsiders and Birds of Prey.  She was recently portrayed by Rila Fukushima on ‘Arrow’. ”

So why was she on a team of villains in ‘Suicide Squad’?”, fans wondered. Empire magazine recently provided a bit of a clue, when it published lines of dialogue from the film.  In one snippet, Flag is quoted as saying:

“She’s got my back. I’d advise not getting killed by her – her sword traps the souls of its victims.”

Indeed, Katana’s blade is called the Soul Taker and does exactly as Flag describes.  Among the souls trapped within is that of her beloved Maseo Yamashiro.  (Pre-‘Flashpoint’ they were actually husband and wife, but that has been altered in the New 52.)

Although ‘Suicide Squad’ at first appears gritty and grounded, the presence of The Enchantress (Cara Delevigne) hints that it won’t shy away from some of the more mystical aspects of the DC Universe.  Is she a hero or a villain?

Katana’s first appearance in comics was as an ally of Batman, as part of his team The Outsiders and she was recently featured as a supporting character on the animated series ‘Beware The Batman’.  Could there be an unrevealed connection between them in the movies?

What do you think?  Are you a fan of Katana’s?  How would you like to see her utilized in this film?

‘Suicide Squad’ will be released on August 5th, 2016 and stars: Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Common, Ike Barinholtz, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Jim Parrack and Karen Fukuhara.
