Not much is known about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ other than the sequel to last year’s surprise mega-smash will arrive on May 5, 2017 and will include yet another soundtrack featuring 70s light rock favorites. Of course, the actors who portrayed the headlining heroes are all coming back– Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldana as Gamora and the voices of Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket. Also confirmed for a return visit are Karen Gillan as Nebula and Michael Rooker as Yondu.
Recently, however, Gamora herself, Saldana posted a video on Facebook in which she praised her ‘GotG’ costar Benicio del Toro for his performance in the acclaimed new crime drama ‘Sicario’. At the end of the video, she stated “I’ll see you on Guardians!” (In Spanish, that is the translation.)
Clearly, that means that viewers can expect to see del Toro in ‘Vol 2’ as the campy Elder of the Universe Taneleer Tivan, better known as The Collector. This character actually first appeared in a post-credit sequence in ‘Thor: The Dark World’, creating a bridge between that movie (and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe) with the more free-standing ‘GotG’.
The Collector was last shown in his archives with Cosmo the space dog and Howard the Duck, two additional cosmic characters from Marvel’s archives.
What role could the deceptive Tivan play in the upcoming movie, which is believed to involve Quill’s discovery of the true identity of his father?
At any rate, are you excited that del Toro will be returning for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’?
