Mixed martial arts champion and Olympic bronze medalist “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is throwing her name into the mix for a major Marvel Studios film role.  Rousey has been quite the subject of buzz lately, after beating Bethe Correia in a staggering 34 seconds.

Rousey, who is the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, has dabbled in acting, appearing in ‘The Expendables 3’ and this year’s record breaker ‘Furious 7’ as well as the ‘Entourage’ movie.  But she wants to break through in a big way as a super hero.  During a Reddit A.M.A. she declared, “Well…a lot of the good ones have been taken, but I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel.”

Well, I’m certainly not going to be the one to tell her that that isn’t an actual character.  She is most likely not talking about the teenage Pakistani American Ms. Marvel, so presumably she means Captain Marvel, the first female hero that will be headlining a Marvel movie set for release in 2018.

Her fans certainly seem thrilled with the idea and began mocking up pictures of Rousey dressed as Marvel’s premier female powerhouse, which Rousey herself shared, exclaiming “There were so many cool ones that I couldn’t pick just one to share.”  View them below and judge for yourself:

Rousey is physically a perfect match for the character (real name Carol Danvers), tall, blonde and muscular. Though Captain Marvel can fly and has energy powers, she also has incredible strength and can physically brawl with the best of them.  So in that department, she’s perfect!

Having never seen the movies in which she appeared, however, I can’t attest to her acting ability.  Whomever gets the role has to be able to hold their own on camera against the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and other seasoned pros.  Among the other acclaimed female actors in Marvel’s universe are Natalie Portman and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Other names that have surfaced in reference to the role of Captain Marvel include Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron, both well established and esteemed performers, so Rousey may not be able to punch and kick her way through that kind of talent.  But who knows?

Is Rousey the right choice for Captain Marvel?  Or should another, better established actor be chosen?

‘Captain Marvel’ starring whomever gets picked opens November 2, 2018.
