We’ve waited 20 years and now we have the title for the long awaited sequel to ‘Independence Day 2‘! During the live stream press event for Roland Emmerich’s sequel, the director wasted no time to bring out the new title for his film. Drum roll please….

Why “Resurgence”? Here’s how Emmerich explains it:

“It’s a little bit like a resurgence for us all. It’s like a very different world. We call it in the film the War of 96. It’s like a post-world war generation which is like unified. And that’s amazing to see a world come together against a common enemy and that’s a resurgence.”

‘Independence Resurgence’ is set 20 years after the first ‘Independence Day’ film which Emmerich calls the “War of 96.” Earth has now been able to take the alien technology from the downed spacecrafts and create a hybrid technology of our own. Some of this was seen as set props used as the backdrop of the live stream event such as the Moon Tug that is housed on the moon as part of the military’s Earth Space Defense division and the Alien/Human fighter jet with anti-gravity capabilities (it makes sense that the technology form the alien fighter crafts used by Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith in the first film would be used to upgrade our military fighter jets in the sequel):

No new insight as to the plot of the film was revealed during the press conference but we do have this synopsis which was released a couple weeks ago:

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Filming has already begun on ‘Independence Day Resurgence’ and we’ll have more for you as it comes out! In the meantime what do you think of the sequel’s title?
