(Warning: You are about to enter ‘Avenger: Age of Ultron’ spoiler territory!)
We’ve long heard rumors of Captain Marvel being included in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and at one point that was true but she was cut for a very solid reason. In fact, footage was even filmed to include her though was later changed to be swapped out for another character. In a recent interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige actually weighed in how it came to be, why it wasn’t included, and what happened instead to still keep the scene somewhat intact.
“[Captain Marvel] was in a draft. But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, ‘Who is that?’ It’s just not the way we’ve done it before.”
Okay, I get that. While Marvel comic fans would know exactly who she is and be stoked much of the audience might be scratching their heads. Honestly she does deserve a larger introduction as well.
The scene that she was included in didn’t go away though and was reused with someone else in her place. This does include a minor spoiler for the ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ for those wanting to go into the movie without knowing what to expect:
“The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later.’ [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn’t Joss] ‘We’re not putting her in there!”
Also another minor spoiler? It seems that Scarlet Witch might just be appearing on ‘Captain America: Civil War’ if the following quote is a hint at casting for the film:
“Finally Joss was like ‘Let’s use those plates to let Scarlet Witch fly into frame, give her a big entrance?’ And that makes sense – she’s come to their side, and she deserves the cool intro, which will feed into another movie we start shooting in a few weeks.”
That sure does sound like they are planning on using her again and as ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ is next on the plate to film, I think we’ll be seeing more of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch sooner than later.
