The Winds of Winter‘ the sixth book in the ‘Game of Thrones’ series will not be released in 2015. I’m going to let that sink in for a moment. Fans who have been worried about George R.R. Martin‘s delay have reason to be as it will be in 2016 at the earliest before we read the next installment. Yes, we all have to wait another year to find out more about what Martin has in mind for us.

According to HarperCollins executive Jane Johnson, “I have no information on likely delivery. These are increasingly complex books and require immense amounts of concentration to write. Fans really ought to appreciate that the length of these monsters is equivalent to two or three novels by other writers.”

We know that Martin has been taking his time putting the novel together and with fans having already figured out the ending you could almost wonder if he has re-writes in mind. Most likely not though as no one is sure exactly which ending of the thousands suggested online is the real one.

To put it in perspective, ‘A Dance With Dragons’ was released in 2011 so we’re looking at five years between volumes. With HBO’s television series rapidly approaching the endpoint in the novels, this has reason for concern. Will we be getting spoilers on the novels early from the books? Will the series fill in missing plot lines to buy time for the next novel to come out? It is far too early to tell.

However, we won’t be without any new ‘Game of Thrones’ content this year! HarperCollins is re-releasing three novellas that take place in Westeros and according to Johnson, “The novellas are illustrated in black-and-white line drawings throughout by Gary Gianni in classic style. It will be a truly lovely book, and I adore these clever, funny stories.”

Are you disappointed to hear that the next novel is being pushed back? Do you think we’ll get some spoilers on the novels as the television series pushes forward? Share your thoughts below!
