It is sad news but Idris Elba (‘Pacific Rim‘,’Prometheus‘) recently slipped in a recent interview about ‘No Good Deed’ that he would not be taking on the role of Luke Cage for Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series.
While Elba would honestly have been perfect for the role, this shouldn’t be surprising to anyone as he was already acted in both ‘Thor’ and ‘Thor: The Dark World’ as Heimdall. While Marvel could easily work some magic to have him play another part as Heimdall tends to have a helmet on with his features obscured, it would be hard to see them having a single actor cast in multiple roles unless one of them happened to be completely CGI with limited speech such as Vin Diesel playing Groot in’Guardians of the Galaxy‘ and another rumored role that would have him not saying a whole lot.
The big news though is how he revealed he wouldn’t be cast with the following quote:
“Uh, I think there’s an actor already signed on for it, fortunately or unfortunately”
Yes ladies and gentlemen, someone has been cast to play Luke Cage! The true question now is who?
The reason many have had their hopes up on Elba taking the role, aside from his great acting talents, is that nearly a year ago he said, “There was talk about Luke Cage at one time — I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character. They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened.” Of course, it is unsure if this talk was before or after he ended up as Heimdall.
More recently we’ve also heard that Terry Crews (‘The Expendables 3′,’Terminator Salvation’) was interested in the role:
“He was our Superman. There were no African-American superheroes out there. He was the first. He was the man. He was the one. The only example we could look at. I remember then seeing Falcon and a couple of others. Even in the D.C. Universe there was Cyborg. But Luke Cage was the original one where you said ‘This is me. This is my guy. This is the character. So he’s the equivalent to Superman for me.”
Terry also already has a history with Marvel having voiced Blade in a couple episodes of ‘Ultimate Spider-Man.’ With that much passion about the character, could this indicate who was chosen for the part? Only time will tell.
