It seems that Marvel is starting to shake up its Avengers line up, first with Captain America being set to be replaced again, and now with an all-new Thor which was just announced on ‘The View’. So it seems that the Thor we know is going to be going away and a female Thor will be taking his place. Is this actually a new Thor or will this be the classic cycle of rebirth that happens through the now broken cycle of Ragnorak? It’s hard to say but she is sure to shake things up.

It feels a bit out of place with first Captain America just having announced to be replaced as he’s lost his powers, Wolverine is set to die, and now this. What is actually kind of irksome is that anyone who has been following the current story line has seen that Thor will grow old and be in charge of Asgard, the Odin Force, and his trust Mjölnir. Sure, timelines change in Marvel but this seems rather an abrupt direction change.

According to editor Wil Moss, “The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription. The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Writer Jason Aaron whose work I tend to love added in that “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

I won’t lie, I’m kind of curious what is going to make Thor have a sex change here and partially suspect they will have Loki involved in the shenanigans. That quote says it is THE Thor of the Marvel universe and also that she won’t be a “temporary female substitute”.

I feel that we’re missing out on some major details here.

I would like to throw in that on ‘The View’ Whoopi Goldberg stated that “t’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe. Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That’s right. Thor is a woman!” First off if she is right and he messed up and is no longer Thor then we actually are seeing a new Thor. I suspect her information is a bit off though as this is not the first time that Mjolnir has been held by a woman as both Storm and Rogue of the X-Men have lifted “that damn hammer” before.

All of that being said, I’m a little annoyed by this. With the current timing of the Thor story line we’re currently reading (with an old male Thor in charge of Asgard), and the major changes to Captain America as well as the death of Wolverine right now, I have to wonder, what’s next? Is Tony going to start drinking again and his brother has to take over as Iron Man? Or any of the other number replacements over the years?

What do you think of this new take on Thor? Do you think the timing is bad with everything else going on? What exactly is Marvel playing at by changing around so many main characters at once? Share your thoughts below true believers!
