In typical ‘Game of Thrones’ fashion, this week’s episode titled ‘The Mountain and the Viper’ left us in shock and awe. From the opening titles to the end credits, fans were thrown curveballs left and right. And while many are still in shock over the events of the episode, it was a whole lot to take in. Thankfully, HBO has released a number of featurettes to talk us through all these interesting developments from the latest installment of the acclaimed fantasy drama.

In the first video, writers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff cover some of the biggest moments of the episode including Sansa Stark’s evolution, Jorah Mormont’s betrayal, Jamie and Tyrion’s potentially final conversation, and the motivations of Oberyn Martell:

The next two videos focus on specific characters. First, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ author George R.R. Martin discusses how Sansa has evolved from piece to player in this game of thrones despite not being a warrior like her siblings. Then, Emilia Clarke and Iain Glen share why Ser Jorah’s betrayal was the biggest blow to Daenerys yet:

Finally, the last featurette goes behind the scenes into the creation of the main event bout that saw Ser Gregor Clegane AKA The Mountain take on the Red Viper of Dorne in a trial by combat to determine the fate of Tyrion Lannister. If there was anything from this episode that stuck with fans, it was definitely this fight, but now you can know exactly how they did it here:

Oh yeah, and since they didn’t show it in any of these videos, here’s a gif of Oberyn’s fate at the literal hands of the Mountain in case the image hasn’t escaped your mind yet:

What did you think about this week’s episode of ‘Game of Thrones’? Did you find these featurettes informative? And how shocked were you when the writers dangled that tiny bit of satisfaction in front of you only to have it’s eyes gouged out before the credits rolled? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Game of Thrones’ airs Sundays at 9:00pm on HBO.
