Wow! Has it been 20 years of ‘Hellboy’ already? Where has the time gone? Celebrating the 20th year of the release of ‘Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1’ Dark Horse is officially making March 22nd, 2014, ‘Hellboy Day’. While this is sadly not a recognized holiday to get me out of work (yet!), it will be a great celebration of all things related to the ‘beast of the apocalypse’ and his ‘right hand of doom’. He is Mike Mignola’s most well known creation and has taken a special place in the hearts of many with a unique style of both storytelling and artwork.

It all started when Anung Un Rama (“and upon his brow is set a crown of flame”), or Hellboy as he’s more commonly known, was summoned to Earth as an infant demon and raised as a son by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm who taught him to do the right thing. In this world, nurture has clearly overshadowed nature as Hellboy truly is a prince of Hell and his destiny is tied with the destruction of humanity. He just doesn’t see things happening that way.

In celebration of everyone’s favorite ex-B.P.R.D. member there will be events going on at comic shops across the country with exclusive promotional material as well as discounts on all ‘Hellboy’ and ‘B.P.R.D.’ titles. On top of this there will be a new sampler comic being released that has two classic Mignola tales: “The Ghoul” and “Another Day at The Office,” as well as two new stories which will be by Mignola, Fabio Moon, and R. Sikoryak!

If you are near West Hollywood, CA, though, you’ll have a real treat in store as Meltdown Comics and Collectibles will have Mike Mignola in store that day! (I’m jealous of you. Seriously jealous.)

Finally there will be a special hardcover being released you might be interested in entitled ’20 Years of Hellboy’ which will be on sale on the 19th. It will include Mignola’s favorite covers and illustrations in a gallery style dating back to his first drawing of Hellboy through today!
