Yes ladies and gentlemen, ‘Insidious Chapter 3’ has been greenlit to turn the films into a trilogy. While a name hasn’t been officially given to the film yet, one would assume they follow the naming scheme of the sequel. If you had any doubt if there would be a third installment into the world of ‘Insidious,’ you really only had to check the box office open of $41 million this past weekend. With one of the largest grossing horror openings of all time and one of the largest for the month of September they have another hit on their hands.

The third film in the series will once again be written by Leigh Whannell (‘Saw’) who penned the first two. However, it currently looks as if the director’s seat will be shifting from James Wan (‘The Conjuring‘). A new director has not yet been named.

Peter Schlessel, FilmDistrict’s CEO, Xavier Marchand, eOne’s President, Film Production, and Steven Bersch, President of SPWA got together and released a joint statement:

“The release of the first ‘Insidious’ resonated with audiences around the world and quickly became one of the most talked about films in 2011. This weekend moviegoers enjoyed the terrifying continuation of the first film and we are confident they will be excited to see the third chapter of the ‘Insidious’ world. There is nobody better suited to bring audiences the next chapter of this haunting story than Leigh who has brilliantly written both ‘Insidious’ and ‘Insidious Chapter 2.”

That was followed up by Jason Blum of Blumhouse who had this to say on working with the three mentioned above:

“FilmDistrict, eOne and SPWA have been incredible partners on the ‘Insidious’ franchise. We are all so grateful for how audiences embraced James Wan and Leigh’s latest film and are excited to see what Leigh has in store for the third chapter.”

There is no set plot for the third film as of yet with it just having been announced. Most likely it will once again be related to the Lambert family who are trapped in their connection to the spirit world. Which members may be returning would be hard to say without spoilers from the freshly released ‘Insidious Chapter 2’.
