Back in late 2011, while they were still working on ‘Cloud Atlas’, we learned that Andy and Lana Wachowski would be revisiting the realm of action sci-fi with their next film titled ‘Jupiter Ascending’. Then after a long silence, the movie locked in Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum for the lead roles, but at the time, there were absolutely no details about who they’d play or what story they’d be involved in at all. The Wachowskis are deep into shooting right now and a synopsis finally surfaced along with some set photos when they began, but even then, we didn’t know much about what to expect from the filmmaking family.

However, a bit more light has been shed on the mysterious project lately by one of the film’s stars. While promoting his new film ‘White House Down’, Tatum revealed in an interview with Collider some new details about what the Wachowskis have up their sleeves for this completely original tale:

“We are breaking ground on—I mean it’s a tough shoot.  We’re doing stuff that’s never been done, inside the camera, in the CG world, and the physical stuff.  There’s very little, if not no, digital stuntmen in the movie.  All the stuff is really real and it’s been hard figuring it out because they don’t like doing anything that’s been done before.  So we’re definitely doing some new stuff, so hopefully everybody likes it.  And it’s fun, it’s got some cheek to it.  It’s a cheeky movie a little bit.”

Previously, the only thing known about Tatum’s character was that he would be a “a genetically engineered ex-military hunter” tracking Kunis’ titular character Jupiter, but in the interview, the actor goes on to talk about his character, specifically its species:

“I’m a splice, splices are essentially built in a test tube.  I’m a hybrid wolf and human.  And half albino, so I’m a little defective.”

Considering that the schedule of movies coming out in the next few years is filled with sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations, it’s very refreshing to hear that a wholly original property is getting off the ground at a major studio. And if anybody can change the game at this point and time, it’s surely the Wachowski siblings. They did it before and they can do it again.
