Previously on Abe Sapien, Abe has returned from a hiatus in the world of B.P.R.D. although we don’t exactly know where hes been, what he’s been doing, or where he’s going. We are starting to learn more though. Last issue the B.P.R.D. found out he was still around and now aggressively tracking him. He doesn’t have time for the distractions of the organization he had spent so much of his life helping though as something bigger is going on and he needs to learn more about himself to find how he fits into it all.

To do this though he does have to briefly return to the B.P.R.D. HQ, just not on their terms or ideally even to let most of them know he’s there. At the HQ he meets with Panya, an ancient human from Egyptian times who was mummified and brought back to the land of the living in the mid 1800’s. She has powerful visions and knows much about the past, present, and future though the extend of her knowledge is often vague.

She knows Abe has a large impact on what is to come. She won’t tell him directly what he needs to know. She stresses though that he has to and will find the answers.

From here Abe is shown back to travelling and ends up finding a town nearly untouched by the destruction that seems to surround it. He enters it looking for a safe spot and finds sanctuary in the town’s church. He also finds sanctuary by the priest of the church who is overly welcome to such a strange looking creature though clearly seems to understand that is a man and not a monster.

We find out why that is though as Abe observes a sermon that the priest gives. Most of the town has been mutated by the demons that have been unleashed upon the world and he believes that Abe is an angel from God who has come to help guide them into the light.

He is preaching vehemently that their mutations are by divine right and not a curse. He is pushing them in a way he never has before with his angel just upstairs. He pushes them to a breaking point and starts angering the townsfolk who all feel their ‘blessing’ is a burden (and rightfully so.)

The priest won’t give up though a keeps pushing them until the anger boils over and the crowd turns violent. Abe steps in to save the priest and is struck by one of the crowd who he hits back and launches across the room as while he was once a man we all know he’s been so much more for such a long time.

As this chapter closes we see Abe observing that the priest is about to be hung and clearly is going to try to stop it. With this only being a 3 part mini-series I’m wondering how many answers we will truly get about whats going on with Abe in the single remaining issue.

I have faith we’ll get some answers but what questions will they lead us too?
