Whether it’s wanted or not, Michael Bay is deep into preproduction for ‘Transformers 4’ and used CinemaCon to announce a big casting coup: Stanley Tucci has now joined the cast!

Tucci is a familiar face in the cinema world and many in the sci-fi genre recognize him as Dr. Abraham Erskine, the scientist who turned Steve Rogers into Captain America in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and Caesar Flickman in ‘The Hunger Games.’ He finished filming ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ where he played Dionysus and will be reprising his role as show host Flickman in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.’

Not much more was given by Bay about Tucci’s part or about the film. What we do know is that ‘Transformers 4’ takes place 4 years after ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and that the robots have been redesigned. Mark Wahlberg will be playing the lead role with Nicola Peltz as his daughter and Jack Reynor as her race car driver boyfriend.

Last month, a synopsis was revealed which shed a little more light on what the film will be about:

As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.

Oddly, Bay has bypassed using the trendy high frame rate technique used in ‘ ’ and instead will be using the new IMAX 3D digital cameras. Due to the huge expense to use these types of equipment, Bay will undoubtedly only be using them for the extreme actions scenes that will most benefit from being seen in 3D IMAX. But since we are dealing with Bay, that could mean the majority of the movie.

Production is set to begin next month and Bay did tease that he has signed on another actor for the film but didn’t reveal who that was. As usual, when we find out who it is, we’ll let you know!

‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ is slated to be in theaters on June 27, 2014.
