So far, after what very little we know about the film coming out on May 17th, we have certainly been living in darkness. The Countdown comics for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ have been asking more questions than answering them, and we still don’t know who the bad guy really is in the movie. Good news is that IDW is to release an epilogue to the movie and comics entitled “After Darkness”, which will be issues #21-23 on the already ongoing ‘Star Trek’ title with the publisher.

The interview on Comic Book Resources wasn’t entirely enlightening, and it looks like they are going to be as closed lipped about these comics as they have been with everything else related to the reboot.

Here’s what we do know:

  • Robert Orci will be overseeing this just as he had with other promotional countdown comics.
  • Mike Johnson will write, as he had done with the “Countdown” comics, these issues as well.
  • Jim Messina will not be returning to the art, which will be taken care of by Stellar Labs, the people behind the Mirror Universe run (#15 & #16) of the IDW Star Trek title.
  • Whoever Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is in the movie, he will not be apart of”After Darkness”.

What else we know is that Mike Johnson takes perverse pleasure in not revealing any spoilers to us wanting fans.

It’s fun to frustrate friends and family with evasive answers, but most of all I’m just looking forward to everyone seeing the movie so we can all talk about it. The biggest problem I have is watching every word I say so I don’t accidentally spill any beans. Suffice it to say that they are awesome, epic beans.

In any case, it looks like it’s going to be a big year for canon comic book spin offs for IDW, especially in light of the  release of X-Files Season 10 this summer. We’ve got big things to wait for, and in a month of half we’ll see if it was worth it.
