Lately studios need to do more than just release trailers and clips for movie goers to see their films. In this day and age they also need to take advantage of digital media and Paramount has done just that with the release of the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ app.

The app will take users where no man has gone before by allowing them to go on “missions” which, when completed, will unlock special content and footage from the film not available anywhere else. While the app is actually available to download now, it won’t be officially launched until Super Bowl Sunday.

The cool thing about the app is that is allows you to “join” Star Fleet Academy. As you complete the missions, you gain points which help you go up in rank and new missions will appear. The best part? You are not obligated to do all the missions in order to unlock content and can skip missions that don’t interest you.

There are 3 types of missions: image scanning, audio scanning and one where you actually have to go to a specific location. Most of the missions are pretty simplistic ranging from scanning a photo of Harrison breaking through glass as he gets away and scanning an image of the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ comic cover. The first map mission, however, is to visit the future site of the Starfleet Academy in San Francisco (since I live several hours away, I’ll obviously be skipping this mission!). Users have about 8 missions to start with new missions being unveiled every week. One of the first missions involve obtaining a sound scan of the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ ad when it airs during the Super Bowl!

Moving up in rank is not very difficult and the app is like a scavenger hunt for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ material, which is cool to do even if it wasn’t needed for an app. Once the official launch occurs on Sunday, new content (such as videos, images and wallpapers) will be delivered directly to your phone. There will also be opportunities and special offers only available to app users like extended versions of the trailer and exclusive movie clips! If you register with the app, one lucky (and I emphasize lucky) will win the grand prize of a VIP trip to attend the ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ US premiere!

Now if you’re wondering if the app will reveal some information on who that top secret villain Benedict Cumberbatch is playing, Mitch Lusas, director of product development, had this to say:

“For people who are diehards, they’re going to find hints in here. There are going to be hints. His character is fun.”

That alone is reason enough to download the app, wouldn’t you say?

The ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ app costs nothing and you can download it from the Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store.
