Animated films are big business and are getting noticed as much as movies do for Oscar contention. After all, 19 movies (including ‘Rise of the Guardians,’ ‘Frankensweenie,’ ‘Wreck It Ralph’ ‘ParaNorman’) are eligible for the Best Animated Film Award for next year’s Academy Awards.  So it’s no surprise that we’ll see more and more family oriented films like these coming out.

The latest to be released is ‘Escape from Planet Earth.’ While I’ve yet to see a film that rivals the ones from Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks, The Weinstein Company’s film looks pretty cute, although the plot is a bit cliché.

The trailer comes after what THR calls a contentious lawsuit filed between the original writer/director, Tony Leech, and producer, Brian Inerfeld, against Harvey and Bob Weinstein after they were removed from the film. Leech and Inerfeld claim that the brothers were “out of control” and “sabotaged what should have been a highly profitable movie through a potent combination of hubris, incompetence, profligate spending and contempt for contractual obligations” while a source states that the Weinsteins thought that the duo “couldn’t deliver the movie that was expected, so they were fired.”

The film has since been redone but you can see if you think the Weinsteins have an animated hit on their hands after the synopsis below.

Synopsis:

The 3D animated family comedy catapults moviegoers to planet Baab where admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA’s no-nonsense chief Lena (Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary’s warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (Gandolfini), it’s up to scrawny, risk-adverse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Parker) and their adventure hungry son Kip.
