After the success of the ‘Paranormal Activity’ movies, Paramount has been gearing up more “micro-budget” films. In fact, they even created Insurge to put out exclusively low-budget thrillers, the first being ‘The Devil Inside’, which grossed over $100 million globally after only costing $1 million to make.
Now, the studio is looking for it’s next low-budget thriller, and /Film is saying that it might come from J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot. This time around, instead of going for a more horror type of thriller, Abrams is presenting a science fiction feature called ‘God Particle’ written by Oren Uziel. Here’s a synopsis of the story:
“After a physics experiment with a large hadron accelerator causes the Earth to seemingly vanish completely, the terrified crew of an orbiting American space station is left floating in the middle of now-even-more-empty space. When a European spacecraft appears on their radar, the Americans must determine whether it’s their salvation, or a harbinger of doom.”
I am intrigued by this idea. It sounds different than any other micro-budget film out there now and, in the hands of the right director, this could be a pretty awesome ride to take. Sure, Abrams would be a great choice to direct, but since the idea is that they’re looking to shoot the film for $5 million or less, the man behind ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Super 8’ will probably only produce.
What do you think about ‘God Particle’? Do you think that it could be Paramount’s next big micro-budget hit?
