“The truth is out there” and ‘X-Files’ producer Frank Spotnitz wants to bring it to the big screen.

During a press junket for his new UK series ‘Hunted’ (which Spotnitz originally had Gillian Anderson in mind to star in), Spotnitz was asked about the possibility of another X-Files film. “There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie,” he says, “I do feel like it would be a terrible shame if that didn’t happen.”

Spotnitz went on to say that he would like to see the focus of the movie be brought back to the series’ roots of the alien colonization and government conspiracy storylines, “It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonization of Earth… I have a clear idea of how it would go and I’ve been talking to (creater and executive producer) Chris Carter about it for a long time.”

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (who played Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on the series) have already expressed publically that they’d like to see a final movie to give the fans some closure with the series. And although there already has been 2 films made from the series, the second movie ‘X-Files: I Want To Believe” left much to be desired and strayed away from what made the series so popular.

Carter, Duchnovy, and Anderson will all be appearing in the ‘Fox 25th Anniversary Special’ which airs on Sunday, April 22 starting at 8PM ET/PT. Who knows if the subject of another movie will come up but it would be a great time to bring the subject up.

‘X-Files’ became a landmark television series that brought new meaning to government cover ups and extraterrestrial visitations. A third ‘X-Files’ movie would be able to erase the monstrosity of the last one and give the series an ending it truly deserves.  After all, wouldn’t it be great to find out more about Scully’s baby and its place in the grand scheme of it all?

Fox still owns the sequel rights to the show and are apparently reluctant for another movie due to the lackluster box office sales of the last film. But Spotnitz, has not given up on the prosect and tells the fans, “I’ll keep banging the drum whenever I meet the Fox guys.”
