Will ‘Terra Nova’ Be Extinct Next Season? (Updated)

The season finale of ‘Terra Nova’ aired last night and while Fox hasn’t made a definitive decision as to whether or not to renew the series, the producers are moving forward to make sure its stars will be available if the order comes through.

Options for the cast expire on December 31st, but Deadline has revealed that pickups for two of the major stars, Jason O’Mara (‘Jim Shannon’) and Stephen Lang (‘Commander Nathaniel Taylor’), are likely to occur. Fox was originally supposed to make a decision about the series’ future last week but for some reason the decision making has been postponed until January. In the meantime, the producers wanted to ensure that O’Mara and Lang will be on board if a second season was a go.

Looking for a way to up their game in the second season, the producers are also looking for high level writers to join the team although no names have been mentioned as to who they’d like to come on board. Some fans have complained about the writing and feel that the series needs to really work on alleviating the many plot holes and establishing the characters more so that the audience can be emotionally involved if it is expected to continue to be watchable.

Last night’s season finale drew in a 2.2 rating in adults 18-49 and had 7.2 million viewers. While better than last week’s numbers, it still couldn’t beat CBS’ ‘2 Broke Girls’ who had 7.7 million viewers watching a repeat episode. ‘Terra Nova’ did, however, rank in 30th place in overall viewership.

These numbers don’t make it easy for Fox to make a decision as they are neither that great nor that bad. If the network does decide to renew, then production will have a very tight schedule as filming will have to start in April for a September season premiere date due to the show’s elaborate post production visual effects.

So at the moment, it’s a waiting game to see if ‘Terra Nova’ returns next season. What do you think? Would you like to see ‘Terra Nova’ return or should it follow the same future as the dinosaurs?

After some months of speculation as to whether or not ‘Terra Nova’ will come back for another season, Fox announced last night that they have decided to cancel it. Maybe there is a little hope though, as the show is being shopped around to other networks.  For the full story click the link below.

    It was a decent start and I think deserves more time on the air.  Plus the other network channels don’t have anything like it.  Fox is well known for cancelling Freshman shows and so people tend to not invest a lot of time into them.  I think that’s why it has been slow to grow a major following.

    I’d love to see a second season. The season finale definitely changed up a lot and left a real mystery. I agree that fox is notorious for canceling shows before they get started. I almost didn’t invest my time in watching but the show has a neat premiss and really is an excellent family show, which we need more of on tv.

    I am only able to watch this online, as many others; however, i anticipated this show after seeing all the teaser in the summer. I love terra nova. It has intrigue and drama, set in scifi with dinos. It isnlie star trek next gen at it’s peak, with just enough cliff hanger to keep it interesting, but not enough to frustrate, like Lost did. I hope they do a full second season.

    I’m sure if they used the number of viewers online they would want to continue the series. Its a shame though I feel there will not be a next season and Terra Nova shall be but a thing of the past.

    I love this show. I personally hope it comes back next season. This is one of those shows that every week when I’m reminded that it’s in our DVR list waiting to be watched I get real excited and want to watch it first before anything else on the list!

    The show and I had a bit of a love/hate relationship at first. I was dying to see the first Episode and felt a little disappointed with it, yet despite those feelings I continued watching each one in turn – regardless of how half-baked they seemed to me. I think at one point I was calling it “Star Trek: Enterprise without any starships”…

    And then the last few episodes of the season came along. Hate was beaten by love. The season finale was good and now things are really taking shape for the show, I dearly hope Fox has the presence of mind to see the potential here and bring it back for another season.

    My Husband and I absolutely LOVE this show!! The whole concept of the show is completely possible for our future not that the government would ever admit this. But anywho the show does have it’s little kinks to work out but so does every other show on it’s first season. I really hope they don’t cancel this show!!!

      At the moment, ratings are from actual television viewing and not online or DVR. Too bad though, as it seems like a lot of people watch the show the other two ways.

    They better make a second season!!! There aren’t any good TV shows out anymore and I LOVE Terra Nova! I absolutely can’t wait for Mondays just to see it and we all know, pretty much everyone hates mondays! Please, please, please make more seasons!!! I love how the show gets to the point! I use to like watching Lost but got sick of it after the 3rd season cause they wouldn’t explain a thing and kept jumping around, it was annoying! I would love for Terra Nova to go on!

    please dont cancel Terra Nova!! it is my favorite show, and pretty much all i watch andmy family watches them also, and we have recorded all of them,so i have seen all of them about twice, exept for the season finale, i have watched 4 times. if it does get cancelled i wont have anything else to watch on Tv :( i anm really conting on another season!

    pls bring this back! i am sooo sick of reality TV that i am about to get rid of every tv in the house. the tv is flooded with american idol, 2 broke girls, keeping up with the i dnt give a sh*t kardash*tans, and all the crackhead shows that make my want to cancell my cable! then my favorite show up and decides to stop ( the closer) and terra nova starts and i fall in love with it. then you say you are going to cancell it. DONT.

    Please please please bring it back. I didn’t know about the show when it was airing. My sister and I just watched all the episodes on demand. We’re both obsessed. All the characters were fantastic. Creative concept and the effects were incredible. The both of us would be very disappointed if the season didn’t come back for a second time.

    Man I so hope there is a second season. It been happening to all the ones I like. The Event, Heroes, and Torchwood Miracle day, all have been canceled and I don’t like it one bit. Leaves nothing good on TV to watch.

    Renew it! Please! I’ve seen a lot of posts and reviews about Terra Nova whether it should come back or not and some people state the argument that aside from the starting thrill of humans traveling back in time, you don’t get a lot out of the story but I think that’s a load of bull! I mean come on people its only been one season! You cant expect it to be an epic 5 star blockbuster series after just 13 episodes! and even so I thought each and every episode was great and very well done, it wasn’t just “bang, crash, sex, dino” it was a real story and it SHOULD return, please bring Terra Nova back for a second season! reply if you’re with me Nova fans!

      Can’t say I agree. There have been many shows that came out of the gate fast.   “24″, The West Wing, Battlestar Galactica, heck even Heroes had a great start although it faded pretty quickly after the first season. 

      The show is interesting, and has me watching, and I will tune in for the start of the second season but the writing makes me cringe at times, as it can be pretty corny. I really think the characters need to get a bit deeper, plot lines need to be a little grittier, and I desperately want Taylor to stop using Hollywood cliche one liners.  I hope they DO higher better writers.. They show has promise and can be saved, but it needs to start with the writing.

      And btw… kill of the head of the sixers.. She’s just a bad actress… period. Replace her with someone with better acting ability.

    I have a love/hate relationship with the show. I like the premise of the show and the mystery surrounding the sixers and Taylor’s son had me interested.  However, aside from the pilot episode, I have felt the FX for the dinosaurs are dated. Granted this is TV so I am able to except that but I would think the FX could be improved. But my biggest complaint is the writing.

    Shannon is the best actor on the show it seems… Taylor seems like a B grade actor, which he may well be, but it sure doesn’t help his case when he (as well as others) are given some really bad lines.  “Lets go kick some a$$” for example.  This show would be great if it would dial down the Tango and Cash dialogue and come up with some grittier dialogue. Battlestar Galactica and Lost had much better dialogue then what Im hearing here.  Im glad to hear they are considering bringing on higher profile writers. That’s good. I think if this show is going to keep my interest next season, the writing (and plot lines) need to get better.

    Terra nova is awesome! I for one will be pissed if they cancel it. Lost didnt have a huge fan base til after the first season either. hopefully they’ll play the reruns in order over the spring/summer and will draw a larger fan based so they’ll bring it back for alot more seasons!

    The dialogue is very patchy at times and the over arching stories aren’t always followed through, but it has the whole family watching, including a 10 and a 3 yr old. It’s a fun series and I’d like to see it continue, but as it stands it’s not a great series.

    PLEASE KEEP TERRA NOVA ON!! Five children in the house that watch it beginning to end without budging.  I love that time when they are focused on something else then bothering me. However, I also enjoy it very much, enough to watch it from the DVR after the kids go to bed so I can focus on it!

    Not all shows start off well -_____- and besides it was only up to 12 episodes- that’s not enough episodes to hook up a world wide audience so they should give it another chance! With more episodes in one season! Ahaha

    Where I live, the season finale airs tonight. I will be so sad to see the end of the season! Everyone watches it in my family. I love it. The characters are real, the storyline eventful and exciting and I think it’s done well for just 12 episodes! Come on, make another few seasons for us Terra Nova fans!

        Australia. Often, here the shows air much later, but Ten was able to get the show to air just days after the US release. There were lots of interruptions. The finale aired in December.

    After the first 4 or 5 episodes I lost interest. Lang needs to hit the gym again, looks like a twig in Terra Nova compared to Avatar..

    If you can revamp the script writing and actually get a second season, I’ll come back for a second viewing. But I was quite disinterested after a few episodes. Guess that’s what happens when you take someone else’s idea without having the creative genius of the visionary. I laugh at your failures.

    Well from what has been reported the execs at Fox seem to be leaning towards a season 2.  At least that’s what I’ve read online.  I think a lot of it depends on how well Alcatraz and Touch end up doing… but I’m guessing Fox will have to make a decision soon.  It probably takes a long time to make each episode of Terra Nova and if it gets renewed they will probably need to start filming soon.

      They are suppose to make a decision this month as filming does have to start soon (around April at the latest) in order to get all the post production effects in before the fall season starts in September. From the sound of the comments here alone, it looks like there are many fans of the show and are in favor of a second season.

    I just love Terra Nova. It has the Spielberg touch. I love how it is family oriented, something for the whole family, it is for all ages. I really hope it does not get cancelled. My mom and I just love it and she is 62. My Monday nights just are not the same with out it. I looked forward to it.

    love,love, LOVE this show!!!!  Please bring it back.  Don’t be like every other network and put a new show, a great show up against something iconic like dancing with the stars and then pull it when it gets a mediocre reception, change it’s time slot or don’t, people who love both will  just continue to use their dvr’s but don’t cancel it!

    I’ve taped every episode so that they are all in my t.v’s hardrive. That’s how crazy I am about this show if you axe it I will be absolutely devastated. Terra Nova is the one thing I look forward to at the end of the week. I would give this show 10/10 (I would give it more but you can’t go higher than 10/10 without sounding like an idiot).     Terra Nova was the one show that got my family and I hooked on. It would just be terrible to see it over so soon, and with such a big cliff hanger at the end of the final episode. I was sad to see the final episdoe last Sunday night, it’s just not going to be the same…

    I had my doubts going into the show, but Terra Nova pleasantly surprised me.  I was glad to see there wasn’t as much focus on the dinosaurs (they’re just the backdrop), and was glad to see some interesting story arcs take shape (ala Lost).  Definitely a great show with a lot of potential.  PLEASE RENEW TERRA NOVA!

    I don’t watch any regular series on television, but for some reason this one piqued my interest and I started watching it.  Yes I agree, the character development was weak but the premise of the show was new and fresh.  It would be such a shame to see this winner of an idea get scrapped for another tired old reality show.

    Would love to see this show come back! I didn’t find it’s characters weak at all and the imaginitive writing is great. Can you explain to me why you would be a season finale in December when people are Christmas shopping? Can’t you commit to a show for a full year? It seems that you may have comittment issues here and that is why so many good shows unfortunately are sent to the trash heap. This doesn’t make them bad but shows the afore mentioned lack of comittment. This show will inspire conversation that is timely. Not everyone wants to watch basketball. It is disgusting how often the networks sabatage new shows and don’t give them a fighting chance to succeed. So many of our beloved shows didn’t catch on for a couple of years but thank God for executives that beleived in and stood up for these great shows. With the dumming down of America, I think you’d want to use your stage to ensure thoughtful debate on the issues of our time; from the environment, business, politics, and the use of our resources. I applaud you for having this show on in the first place. It has undertones of Avatar. I hope you have the courage to continue where this will lead, like the saga of Lost.

      …..i think u should send this as an email to producers at fox if fox is the “you” in your message. Im sure the author of this article has no authority in the matter of cancellations. On another not this was a great new show and i hope to see it continue. I mean how can a show be perfect on its first run and as D Leach stated it was aired during the holidays so idk im suprised it didnt do so well what twith the avatar-esque-ness lol. I guess not evryone is amazed at special effects anymore.

    there should be another season because lots of people loved this show but not all can comment but if you ask anybody they will say they love this show. dont disapoint us please! MAKE ANOTHER SEASON!!

    My sister waas the first person to reccomend that I watch Terra Nova, and as usual, I didn’t listen to her at first because I was watching a different program but I eventually decided to try it out and am now SO OBSESSED with this show! I love all of the different story lines and the characters and I am desperately hoping that the show will be renewed. Does anyone have any idea when they’ll make their decision? CANNOT WAIT to see it in September :D <= I shall remain optimistic until then!

    Well, everyone, we’re still waiting to hear the official word from Fox. Hopefully  soon as they did say a decision would be made by around this time. Keep your fingers crossed!

    I use to dread Mondays and then Terra Nova changed that for me. I would look forward to Mondays and watched the show faithfully. Even though the show moved to another day I followed it. I have been watching re-runs now on Monday nights. What a shame it would be to cancel this fantastic show.

    I’m a really huge fan of this show and I really hope that It has a second season. I’m always trying to watch the episodes over and over cause I love this show and I had a dream of it one day. Really hope it gets a second season. It would make me really happy.

    I believe Terra Nova has the same potential as Star Trek or Star Gate. It’s been to long since the last SiFi series I’d like to see this t.v series evolve into movies. For all of today sitcom and t.v show are either of people living their ordinary lives I believe we need to take a break from that something to inspire people to become more interest in working to create a futuristic future. And for the average office worker to explore a new world.

    Fox always does this with the good shows, everybody just needs to quit watching Fox shows maybe then they’ll listen to the public.  I for one will not watch another fox series because of this I’ll go to other networks.  Bye, Bye, Fox network, you’ve just lost one fan, hope others will follow.
