Not too long ago we posted an article about Ridley Scott’s interview with Empire Magazine in which he gave some insight about his new movie ‘Prometheus’. Now it looks like he’s opened up some more regarding the mysteries, philosophies and design of the movie.
In an interview with Filmophilia, Scott seemed to be more willing to open up about his views on the making of ‘Alien’, what prompted him to make the movie ‘Prometheus’ and his own ideas about mankind’s place in the universe.
Many have been wondering why the original xenomorph won’t be seen in ‘Prometheus.’ Scott explains the absence quite simply, “They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland..!”
As to why he hasn’t directed a science fiction film lately, well, it wasn’t for lack of trying. Scott had tossed the idea around and even looked for sci-fi projects to direct, but how do you beat perfection? He puts it simply by saying, “…there’s a nice purity to the original Alien. It’s fairly pure.”
Scott also confirms that the storyline will revolve around the Space Jockey from the first film:
“Yeah, so there you have that. I was always amazed that, I mean, I’ve only done two science-fictions, but I was always amazed that no one asked who the hell the Space Jockey was. He wasn’t even called the Space Jockey. During the film they started to call it the Space Jockey. I don’t know who started that one off. I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, well, there’s a story! And the other four [films] missed it! So, here it is.
And [‘Prometheus’] does actually raise all kinds of other questions, because if someone could, a being, could be as monstrously clever to create something like we experienced in the very first one – I always figured it’s a weapon, and I always figured that [the ship in the first Alien] was a carrier of weapons. Therefore, who is that, inside that suit? That wasn’t a skeleton that was a suit. And if you open up the suit, what do you get inside it? And why were they going, where were they going?”
The interview continues on as to reveal his philosophical thoughts about the mythology of ‘Prometheus’ and his admiration of Noomi Rapace as the next Ripley. All in all, this interview seemed to expose more about Scott and his thoughts about the movie than any other interview so far.
Although ‘Prometheus’ doesn’t hit theaters until June 8, it’s already creating quite a buzz as one of the most highly anticipated films for the year. To read the full interview, head over to Filmophilia.
