RoboCop Movie Reboot

The highly regarded cyberpunk movie, ‘RoboCop’, is returning in its own comic book series and in a reboot movie that will be directed by Jose Padilha.

It’s been 24 years since we’ve seen Alex Murphy serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law on the big screen. But don’t expect to see the same ‘RoboCop’ that we saw from Paul Verhoeven (the director of the original version). Comic Book Movie translated an interview with director Jose Padilha from the Dutch entertainment site Film 1, in which Padilha comments on his vision of the movie by saying:

“I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop, and I think that such a film is now urgently needed. But I will not repeat what Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated.”

Some of the issues include how does one change a man into a robot, what is the difference between how humans and robots develop, what is free will and what does it mean to lose that free will.

Considering that Padilha’s movie ‘Elite Squad 2’ about government and police corruption is up for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar this year, he may be the right director to tackle the issues brought forth from the original movie (such as exploitation, corruption, privatization, human nature).  As of yet, no official word has been made as to who will take on the role of ‘RoboCop’ or when the movie will actually be released.

RoboCop Comic Book

In case you can’t wait until the movie comes out, Dynamite Entertainment has announced that it will bring back ‘RoboCop’ in an all new comic book adventure series titled ‘RoboCop: Road Trip’.

The comic, in true original ‘RoboCop’ form, will contain lots of action, violence and, of course, satire. Spearheading the return is series writer Rob Williams who states, “Road Trip is our first chance to take a look at RoboCop’s twisted version of America outside the confines of Old Detroit. But OCP isn’t going to just let Murphy and what’s left of the Old Detroit Police Department run off to get help. An entirely new deadly robot prototype is on their tail. And with Murphy’s mind fracturing following the death of his partner, Lewis, Road Trip has a somewhat psychedelic double meaning. This is RoboCop’s world as you’ve never seen it before.”

Don’t miss the release of ‘RoboCop: Road Trip #1’ which will debut this December!
