If you were worried about Static Shock and the charm of lead character Virgil Hawkins, fret not. This book is in good hands under the guidance of Milestone alumnus John Rozum with artist Scott McDaniel along for the ride as co-writer and penciler. The New 52 ‘Static Shock’ #1 is a great mix of science and action while taking the time to have some fun while developing Static as he explores his new home in New York City. As far as the first crop of the New 52 ‘Static Shock’ #1 is one entertaining read. The book even features another Milestone character as a gruff mentor and teacher for our newly displaced hero.

A mysterious tragedy forced the Hawkins family to relocate from Dakota to New York City. In the Big Apple, Virgil embarks on new adventures in a new high school and a new internship at S.T.A.R. Labs! As Static, he dons a new uniform and establishes a new secret headquarters! But is he ready to take on the new villains who lurk in New York City’s underworld?

Rozum and McDaniel do a pretty amazing job writing Static, he is still as cool and smart as ever. I really feel like they do a lot of service to the memory of Dwayne McDuffie and his electrifying hero. McDaniel has always been a favorite artist of mine, and his work on ‘Static Shock’ is no exception. The new suit is great, and his flying “disc” got a sorely needed upgrade. I can’t wait to see more action in issue #2.

If I have one gripe with ‘Static Shock’ #1, it is that the book felt way too short. I would have liked to see a bit more explanation about what the Hawkins family was doing in New York City and why they had to leave Dakota. It was nice to see the whole family together and still in the “dark” about Virgil’s calling.

Of all the New 52 books out this week, I would have to say ‘Static Shock’ #1 was one of the most fun reads. Also, because of the cliffhanger it is the New 52 Week 1 book that I can’t wait to see what happens next in month. So make sure you add this book to your collection and come back next month for the continuation of this new adventure: “Disarmed!”
