In Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint, protagonist Traci 13 will travel around the globe trying to save it. Since the world’s greatest superheroes never existed, it’ll be up to this 15-year-old girl to try and protect our planet. Does she have what it takes to save the world?
Of the four Flashpoint tie-ins out this week, The World of Flashpoint was the one I knew the least about, but was looking most forward to reading. I am happy to say I was not disappointed.
Traci 13 will be important to Flashpoint and in this issue she has memories of the way the world was before the change. In case you don’t know, Traci 13 is the latest in the long line of “Homo Magi,” humans born with innate powers of sorcery. Traci is forbidden by her father, Doctor Thirteen, to practice magic since her mother died due to magical influences.
I have always liked the way the DC Universe has handled magic. From Doctor Fate to Zatanna, magic is always powerful and always has a price. This is evident in World of Flashpoint with Traci 13’s scarred face.
One of the cool things in this book is that we start to see why the world is at war. It appears Aquaman and Wonder Woman were supposed to be married and then the apparent murder of Hippolyta (Wonder Woman’s mom) set an Amazon/Atlantean War into motion. We also get a glimpse of Kal-EL’s shuttle crashing into Metropolis, introducing alien life to the Earth, but not Superman. We also learn of a Justice Society that never was, due to the “need for speed”; they were never able to be the heroes the world needed without the Flash. I’m guessing the Speed Force in the World of Flashpoint is a little harder to find.
Ok, so this issue ends with some pretty spectacular drama as the H.I.V.E. Collective votes on whether or not to intimate their “Final Solution” to the super-powered war threatening humanity. All of this plus Traci 13 has a confrontation with her daddy dearest, Dr. Thirteen, that sets the stage to continue the story of World of Flashpoint in issue #2 out next month.
A final note, I know there are a lot of Flashpoint tie-ins, but if you are a collector with each #1 you will receive a pin with the purchase of the book. You can see what the different pins will look like for each tie-in below.
