There isn’t a direct quote from Chris Evans in here, but a description of a recent interview with the actor seems to imply that he is done with Captain America after the next two Avengers films finish shooting. We’ve known for years that he only has a six film contract and not the nine-film that many of the other actors have and when the second of the two upcoming ‘Avengers’ films finishes shooting, it does mean that he will have filled his contractual obligations. That isn’t to say that the right story and a proper pay day wouldn’t bring him back for more, but we do know that the studio does have other options if he chooses not to return.

Evans has been one of the main faces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and his films more than any other have set the tone for each phase to come, yet Evans time might be at an end.

In an actor profile in Esquire, they describe Evans as:

Settling in on the couch, he groans. Evans explains that he’s hurting all over because he just started his workout routine the day before to get in shape for the next two Captain America films. The movies will be shot back to back beginning in April. After that, no more red- white-and-blue costume for the thirty-five-year-old. He will have fulfilled his contract.

He does go into detail saying that the time he needs to commit to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has him unable to explore many of the other actor opportunities that he’d like to pursue or even directing. That isn’t to say we won’t see him back; it just is starting to sound less likely.

Not that it would mean the end of Captain America in the films, possibly just of Steve Rogers. We know that in the comics both Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes as well as Anthony Mackie’s Falcon have both worn the mantle and had a chance to wield the shield. In fact, Falcon is still going by Captain America in the comics at this very moment.

On the flipside, he might go the route that Robert Downey Jr. did and only agree to Avengers ensemble films or smaller cameos in movies for the other heroes, so he isn’t working year round for just Marvel Studios.

Only time will tell, but by the end of the next two films, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Captain America sacrificing himself to Thanos to save the day. Of course, we’ve said that about Iron Man as well.
