The drought is almost over! With the broadcast of this year’s Christmas special, ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’, ‘Doctor Who’ will return from a year-long hiatus, the longest such break since the program’s return in 2005.

Through their YouTube channel, BBC America have released a brief featurette to promote the upcoming special. In addition to an assortment of behind the scenes clips, the video features series star Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat discussing the “warmer feel” of the Christmas specials and also the show’s approach to the superhero genre For the curious, Moffat also namechecks who he consider the greatest superhero ever. Check out the video here:

Not that Moffat’s remarks in the video leave much room for doubt, but the special’s official synopsis makes it abundantly clear that the episode will be borrowing liberally from the Superman template: “The family favorite will return on Christmas day as the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, teams up with an investigative journalist played by Charity Wakefield (‘Wolf Hall’, ‘The Player’) and a superhero to save New York from a deadly alien threat.

In addition to the video above, BBC1 has also released a behind the scenes teaser via their Twitter account. While it’s not a proper trailer, it is the closest we’ve had to date:

‘Doctor Who’ will return, first with the transmission of ‘The Return of Doctor Mysterio’ (it’s so nice to finally call it something other than “the 2016 Christmas special”)on Christmas day and then in early 2017 for the premiere of Steven Moffat’s farewell season, which will culminate in next year’s Christmas special. In addition to the returning star Peter Capaldi, the upcoming season and specials will feature Pearl Mackie, Matt Lucas, Justin Chatwin and Charity Wakefield.
