Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai

Fans who have missed the Gremlins franchise are in luck as Warner Streaming is set to deliver an animated series titled ‘Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai.’ WarnerMedia’s streaming platform has been trying to secure the rights to new shows left and right and will need to if they want to attempt to compete with the upcoming Disney+ and already robust offerings presented by Hulu and Netflix.

This new prequel comedy series has been in development since February and now has turned into an adult-focused 10-episode series order. This show was written by Tze Chun (‘Gotham’) and is executive produced by Sam Register and Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Chun and Brendan Hay (‘Robot Chicken’) are also executive producers with Dan Krall (‘Coraline’) producing.

As a prequel, we know:

The series is set in Shanghai in the 1920s and reveals the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 feature film) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

While I love the idea that Gizmo will be returning and that this means many of the same tropes could play out, I’m unsure if they’ll try to find a way to make this canon with it being a secret from our society that Mogwai are running around in potentially massive and evil numbers.
