With Chris Evans likely exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe after ‘Avengers 4’, many are wondering what will become of his character, Steve Rogers, Captain America. Though Marvel could potentially recast, that seems like a long shot. It’s more likely that an existing character will take up the shield. In the comics, within the last ten years or so, both Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and Sam Wilson/The Falcon have operated as Captain America at times. Could fans possibly see Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky in the movies, switch from the White Wolf to the Red, White and Blue Avenger?
He was recently asked about the possibility but he replied:
“No. Not really, no. It’s usually like a dream. People might mention something, but we never go that way.”
While the Marvel actors often play coy and evasive, this sounds like a flat-out denial. It sounds as though the powers that be are bouncing around ideas, with the idea of Bucky becoming Cap being one of them, but it doesn’t sound as though that is the direction that is being pursued… at least not at this time.
What sounds more likely is Stan costarring with Anthony Mackie in a series devoted to The Winter Soldier and Falcon, which is being bandied about as a possible series on Disney+, the new direct to subscriber streaming service, which has already confirmed that a Tom Hiddleston-fronted ‘Loki’ series is on its way.
But so much is being kept secret regarding ‘Avengers 4’ that fans are left to speculate on what may be coming afterward. Perhaps after that film arrives next spring, news will start to surface at a speedier rate.
Of course, Bucky was one of those that were reduced to ash at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, so first thing’s first, we have to find out how he returns.
To find out, we just have to wait until ‘Avengers 4’ arrives in theaters on May 3, 2019.
