We’ve been told that there are three Jokers in DC Comics and now it seems that the cinematic take of the Crown Prince of Crime might be going the same route. While we know that Jared Leto’s take on the character will be back for at least a few more outings including his own stand-alone movie, we now have Joaquin Phoenix officially set to be part of the origin story for everyone’s favorite Batman villain, ‘The Joker.’

Also, the movie has received the green light to go into production this September.

This stand-alone Warner Bros. film isn’t meant to be tied to everything else that DC Films is putting out but if it ends up successful there is always the chance that we’ll get some interconnected DC films which takes place in a cinematic universe alongside the one that is already in place. There have already been rumors that ‘The Batman‘ might be heading in that direction too.

I’m sure that won’t be confusing for casual moviegoers at all.

Todd Phillips (‘The Hangover’,’War Dogs’) will be directing the film which is based on a script which he wrote with Scott Silver. Not too much is known about this origin story but it is said to be “an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”

The movie is set to have a lower budget for a superhero movie at $55 million and will likely end up in the same R-Rated territory as Fox’s recent hits have done.
