These days it is hard to imagine anyone but Mads Mikkelsen as the lead in NBC’s ‘Hannibal‘ but at one point David Tennant was up for the role. Fannibals are probably thrilled that he wasn’t cast and if he was, the entire show would have likely felt different if he was.

With recent outings as villains, it sounds like the actor might be enjoying dipping his feet into playing the darker aspects of humanity as he stated:

“There is something delicious about playing people that go to really dark corners of the human experience. I’m certainly not complaining!”

With the actor playing the likable demon Crowley in the upcoming adaptation of ‘Good Omens,’ it sounds like he’s also enjoying the darker corners of other experiences as well! It appears that multiple meetings occurred though things just didn’t work out, not that Tennant is complaining:

“I met [Hannibal executive producer] Bryan Fuller a couple of times, and we talked about it, but I think they quite wisely chose Mads Mikkelsen, I think he was a perfect choice for it, and I think he did things with that character that I wouldn’t have managed, so I think the right man got the job.”

As we’ve seen on Netflix’s ‘Jessica Jones’ and the recently ‘Bad Samaritan‘, the star has hit his stride playing villains after his time as a hero in both ‘Doctor Who‘ and ‘Broadchurch’ so this casting news isn’t that far out. While I love Tennant, I agree with him that Mikkelsen embodied everyone’s favorite cannibal in a unique way that left fans wanting more.

Would you have preferred that David Tennant had played ‘Hannibal’? How do you think his take on the character would have differed from the way Mads Mikkelsen portrayed him? Share your thoughts below!
