Marvel is killing it with their Cinematic Universe and both Sony and Fox have been lagging behind. While Sony ended up getting into bed with Marvel Studios for Spider-Man, it looks like Fox might be planning to reboot or re-envision The X-Men going forward. Yes, folks, Fox might very well be finding a new direction for their mutant populace after Hugh Jackman hangs up his claws when ‘Logan‘ is released. Sure, ‘Deadpool‘ is a smash hit that we all want to see more of but with the film losing its director even that project is looking to potentially have problems moving forward.
We won’t mention the on again off again attempt at ‘Gambit‘.
However, unlike the ‘Fantastic Four’ reboots the X-Men are still making money. According to THR:
Elsewhere, the reset button has been pressed. Sources say the flagship series will be reconfigured, with Simon Kinberg, overseer of the franchise as producer and writer, working on a new script. Singer, who directed four X-Men movies, will not be returning, according to insiders, but the script is being written with Lawrence, Fassbender and McAvoy optimistically in mind.
We already knew that Singer wasn’t going to be back but this reconfigured might not be quite that steady. All three of the actors mentioned above appear to have said they won’t come back without the others and all seemed less than enthusiastic about reprising their roles.
Another key take away:
One of Fox’s best hopes may be The New Mutants, a spinoff featuring superpowered teens with some overlap with the flagship X-Men. According to sources, director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) could even begin rolling cameras by spring.
While I’m not sure why either of these would truly be an issue with an established cast and a bunch of new recruits who would easily be able to transition into many of the classic X-Men it doesn’t seem like that is the direction the studio is sounding to want to go.
Or, they could just try to sell the rights back to or partner with Marvel Studios which is really what would probably end up making the actual fans the happiest in the long run.
