WARNING, POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!

With all the hype surrounding ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ right now as we approach the release of the film, it is somewhat hard to remember that the next adventure in the galaxy far, far away is currently shooting, and Gareth Edwards clearly has a lot of surprises in store for audiences in his ‘Star Wars: Rogue One.’ While we had heard that Mads Mikkelson (‘Casino Royale,’ ‘Hannibal’) was cast in the film, up to this point no one has had any idea what character the man would be playing. Until recently, when Mikkelson signed a poster after stopping by the Rebel Force Radio podcast, adding under his signature his character’s name, Galen.

For those unaware, Galen is the name of the main character in ‘The Force Unleashed’ series, trained as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice after the villain killed his parents, and used to hunt down the remaining Jedi during the dark years between ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope.’ Eventually he turns on his masters, proving powerful enough to take on Darth Vader and Darth Sidious during combat and survive, and Galen went on to become an instrumental founder of the Rebel Alliance, with his family’s crest actually becoming the well-known anchor symbol of the Alliance.

Now, while the expanded universe might be moot at this point, it has been clear for some time that the movies and new canon were definitely going to be mining the old EU for characters and plot lines that fit their needs. Having Galen “Starkiller” (as was his call-sign) included in ‘Rogue One’ would be very interesting, even if he was not featured prominently (Gareth Edwards has said the film would not have much to do with the Force). It could definitely set the stage for further use of the character, especially if more anthology films take place between the original trilogies.

What are your thoughts on Mads Mikkelson potentially playing the anti-hero of ‘The Force Unleashed?’ Do you think they would do the character justice? Or would it just be a brief cameo? Share your opinion below!
