Over six months ago, we learned that Guillermo Del Toro would be working on his throwback horror film ‘Crimson Peak’ after he wrapped up his commitments to ‘Pacific Rim’. Well, the giant robots versus giant monsters film hits theaters next week, so the renowned filmmaker can now switch gears to focus on his next feature.
Previously, very little was known about Del Toro’s next film except that it would be a set-oriented period piece inspired by classic horror films such as ‘The Omen’, ‘The Exorcist’, and ‘The Shining’. It was also revealed that A-list stars such as Emma Stone, Charlie Hunnam, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Jessica Chastain have all joined the mysterious new film. But that was basically the extent of the available information on it. Aside from Mia Wasikowska of Tim Burton’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ replacing Stone, there have been no new updates on this grand haunted house flick.
But now, the director has revealed some new information about his next movie. While doing some of his final rounds of promoting ‘Pacific Rim’, he spoke about ‘Crimson Peak’. In the interview, he goes into more detail than he has before about the project and how drastically different it’ll be than his other films:
“’Crimson Peak’ is a much, much, much smaller movie, completely character-driven. It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult. Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language. Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever. This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies… The thing I do in those movies is recontextualization, take a movie and then move it into a completely different place. Like a Gothic and then move it into the Spanish Civil War [‘The Devil’s Backbone’]. This is a Gothic romance, haunted house, in the north of England.”
After that, he continues by rattling off some adjectives that could be used to describe what we’ll be seeing once the film finally comes out, including the word “kinky”:
“[It] has moments that are very visceral, physical violence. You’re in this sort of sedate romance and then there is this brutal moment where you’re like, ‘Whoa!’ And it has a lot of kinky moments. The only kinky moment I’ve ever shot is the leg fuck in ‘The Devil’s Backbone’. [laughs] This has a little more kinkiness than that.”
When word first started to emerge about ‘Crimson Peak’, I never really thought that I’d hear that it’s going to be kinky. Just what has Del Toro have planned anyway? Since the film is currently in early pre-production, we’ll likely hear more about it in the coming months.
