‘BioShock Infinite’ fans eager for more information on the enigmatic floating city of Columbia were given a glimpse of its backstory, mockumentary-style, in this new trailer released by Irrational Games.
The jumpy audio and decades-old projector technology lures viewers in and thoroughly creeps them out, showing a world not unlike one we’ve seen before, somewhere under the sea.
Anyone who has plunged into the disturbing and expansive city of Rapture from ‘BioShock’ and ‘BioShock 2’ remembers it as fondly as any survival horror setting, so the city amongst the clouds was a welcome new backdrop when the trailers were first released. However, while the earliest ‘BioShock Infinite’ trailers boasted actual gameplay backed by haunting soul-metal, the general plot points fell a bit to the wayside, making even the most basic hints to setting and characters as prized as a Little Sister full of ADAM.
It seems from the found-footage documentary that business-tycoon-turned-fascist Andrew Ryan from ‘BioShock’ has found well-meaning-utopia competition in Zachary Comstock, the founder of the floating city of Columbia. The grainy video and a decades-old-sounding production company jingle give a nod to the late ’70s, early ’80s series ‘In Search Of…’ and the “found” reels of the Dharma Initiative from ‘Lost’, filling fans of the genre with equal parts excitement, terror, and the itch to solve a mystery.

‘Bioshock Infinite’ comes out on March 26, 2013 on PC, Xbox 260, and PS3.
