There’s a new time travel movie in the works and it looks like it will have a ‘New Girl’ and a wizard as leads. Variety is reporting that Zooey Deschanel and Domhnall Gleeson are in negotiations to star in the low budget film ‘About Time’ from ‘War Horse’ writer and ‘Love Actually’ helmer Richard Curtis.
Before becoming a household name from her new Fox sitcom ‘New Girl,’ Zooey Deschanel gained fame as the wide eyed ingénue in the romcom ‘500 Days of Summer.’ But with the series about to go on hiatus, Deschanel is looking for her next movie to film. Apparently she is mulling over two offers but, according to Variety, is leaning toward the project ‘About Time.’ If she decides to do this film, Deschanel will be playing the role of Mary, the love interest of Gleeson’s character Tim.
Gleeson is best known as Bill Weasley in the ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ movies but has also appeared in ‘True Grit’ and will be seen in two movies this year: ‘Dredd’ and ‘Anna Karenina.’ He has been offered the lead role of Tim who finds out that he comes from a long line of time travelers. When he learns about his gift, he uses his ability in order to change situations for the better.
‘About Time’ was written by Richard Curtis who will also be directing the film. This romantic dramedy seems to be right up his alley as he has also written the screenplays for ‘Bridget Jones Diary’, ‘Notting Hill’, and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ among others. As for the time travel aspect, he also wrote the fan favorite season 6 episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’ for the series ‘Doctor Who.’
Curtis has had great success in the romantic comedy genre and, if his ‘Doctor Who’ episode is anything to go by, the movie will some great moments with a lot of heart. And besides, Deschanel and Gleeson would make a lovely couple! Sometimes low budget films can really be surprising and I have a feeling this project will be one of those. I’m looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.
Filming is slated to begin in the summer for a 2013 release.
