bumblebee

Paramount’s upcoming ‘Transformers’ spinoff film ‘Bumblebee’ has been releasing footage that sets it apart from Michael Bay’s franchise. From gratuitous explosions and blurry CGI to a more relaxed, character driven feel, the Travis Knight directed film looks like a welcome change of pace.

Don’t get it twisted, though. You can’t have shapeshifting robots without a little bit of action! A new clip gives a glimpse into the tensions between the Autobots and Decepticons in the film.

In a recent interview, Knight spoke about his desire to take the aesthetic of ‘Bumblebee’ in a different direction, while paying homage to what came before. Knight said:

“I wanted to pay tribute to that original generation of designs, which I think were just so simple and bold and beautiful. But because this film is set 20 years prior to the events of Michael’s first film, it did give it some license.”

Directed by Knight and written by Christina Hodson, ‘Bumblebee’ will serve as the sixth live-action film in the ‘Transformers’ franchise. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie, the teenage girl who stumbles across Bumblebee (voiced by Dylan O’Brien). John Cena, Pamela Adlon, Justin Theroux, Angela Bassett, Peter Cullen, and Megyn Price also star in the film.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

‘Bumblee’ opens in theaters on Friday, December 21.
